Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal Dryness

What is vaginal dryness?

Vaginal dryness is very common – up to 55% of menopausal women are affected by it. Vaginal dryness is usually the first symptom of Atrophic Vaginitis – thinning, dryness and inflammation of a woman’s vaginal tissues. These tissues normally make a clear lubricating fluid to keep them healthy and supple but if this doesn’t happen vaginal dryness occurs. The main cause of vaginal dryness is a decrease in oestrogen hormone levels – e.g. at the menopause. It is also common in women immediately after childbirth or during breastfeeding. It can occur in women taking contraceptives, at times of stress or as a result of radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

What are the symptoms of vaginal dryness?

Common symptoms of vaginal dryness are burning, itching or soreness of the vagina. Vaginal bleeding (spotting) may also occur. You may first notice vaginal dryness as a lack of natural lubrication during sexual intercourse. Up to about 50% of women with symptoms describe them as moderate or severe.

How long does vaginal dryness last?

Vaginal dryness varies in duration depending on the underlying cause and severity. Symptoms of vaginal dryness usually appear within 12 months of the menopause. However, symptoms can take up to 3 years or more after the menopause to develop. Unlike other symptoms of the menopause, such as hot flushes, that may resolve over time, Atrophic Vaginitis does not resolve spontaneously and can progressively worsen. As about one-third of a woman’s life is after menopause its important to diagnose and treat any problems.

What other causes of my symptoms might there be?

Whilst vaginal burning, itching and pain are often due to vaginal dryness they might be caused by infection, irritation or other causes. It is important to discuss this with your Doctor before starting treatment.

What other problems does vaginal dryness cause?

The most common symptoms of vaginal dryness include itching, burning and soreness. The cause of these can also lead to many women having some degree of urinary urgency. 80% of women with such symptoms report a decrease in sexual desire and satisfaction. Persistent vaginal dryness can lead to pain during sexual intercourse (Dyspareunia). Up to 40% of women are affected by dyspareunia.

What can I do?

As few as 10% of women will talk to their Doctor about vaginal dryness because they are either too embarrassed to discuss it or they consider it to be a natural ageing process that is not treatable. Your Doctor can advise on the best treatment for you. Gynomunal® is a non-hormonal vaginal moisturising gel containing natural hop extract and Vitamin E. It has been specifically formulated for vaginal use and shown to be gentle and soothing. Importantly, unlike some products, Gynomunal® has been clinically proven to provide fast relief from the symptoms of vaginal dryness. Its long-lasting effects help restore vaginal moisture and promote the natural healing process.
